SUMMARY:Censorship of the Arts in Southeast Asia (1)
LOCATION:Room 1.501
DESCRIPTION:Our panel aims to bring together scholars from various discipli
nes with original research on censorship of the arts across Southeast Asia.
Through our case studies we share insights on art practitioners’ experienc
e and negotiation of various kinds of censorship during the creative proces
 s. Bringing together case studies from diverse national contexts, our panel
attempts to identify family resemblances by engaging with the following di
mensions of censorship:\n\n- acts and mechanisms of censorship,\n- censorsh
ip machineries and institutions,\n- alleged and underlying narratives of ju
stification,\n- entanglements with political, religious, social and market
conditions,\n- productive dimensions of censorship and their materializatio
n,\n- the changing nature of censorship in the digital age.\n\nTo address t
hese (and further) questions, this panel invites contributions on censorshi
p of the arts with the aim to generate publications that further and nuance
theoretical engagements with censorship from a Southeast Asian perspective
