SUMMARY:Responding to Troubling Times: The Urgency of Collaborations Between Academics and Artists
LOCATION:Fritz-Reuter-Saal
DESCRIPTION:Various parts of Southeast Asia are faced with intensifying soc
ial and political challenges. Amid these troubling times, academics, especi
ally those working on human rights, conflict, and peace, are confronted wit
h the task of finding better means to communicate their knowledge with all
its nuances and complexities. There is the challenge of making their work a
ccessible to audiences that do not have the patience nor time to delve into
such nuances and complexities, and that of making their material available
and comprehensible—in terms of language and form—to a broader audience, ac
ross age groups. These conditions are particularly pressing for publicly en
gaged scholars who aim to forge understanding in the midst of polarizing an
d hate-filled discourses and attitudes. One way to do this is through more
creative means of communicating their knowledge. \n\nMeanwhile, the work of
artists such as photographers, visual artists, filmmakers, performance art
ists, and fiction writers have had the power to arouse people’s curiosity a
nd imagination while questioning and engaging the status quo. Time and agai
n, different artistic works have been instrumental in elevating awareness a
nd emotion in turbulent times. Therefore, artists and their works provide t
he initial invitation to look and to question, as their works can be widely
accessible. These creative productions can be further enriched and informe
d by materials and perspectives drawn from careful research and analyses—ma
terials and perspectives that academics can provide. \n\nThere is thus enor
mous potential for reaching a broader audience and shaping public opinion a
nd debate through collaborations and intersections between academics and ar
tists, while keeping in mind that such collaborations are subject to simila
r problematics of representation and comprehension of context as any form o
f knowledge production. \n\nThis roundtable discussion will therefore bring
together artists and academics from various parts of Southeast Asia who ha
ve collaborated on certain pressing issues in their respective countries, t
o tackle the following questions: What are the advantages of such collabora
tions? What challenges did they face? What strategies did they employ to ov
ercome these challenges? How has the public responded to their collaborativ
e work? And, what lessons can we glean from these experiences that other ac
ademics and artists may draw from for their own collaborations?\n\nKindly s
